Privacy policy

The short version

We are a volunteer-run chess club, not an advertising business. This website does not use analytics, advertising, or tracking cookies. We do not sell or share your information with anyone. The only personal information we hold is what you deliberately send us, such as a message through our contact form or a request to join our email list.

Who we are

Westport Chess Club is a community chess club in Kansas City, Missouri, established in 1986. We meet at Westport Flea Market Bar & Grill, 817 Westport Rd, Kansas City, MO 64111.

For any question about this policy or about your information, email us at WestportChessClub@gmail.com.

Cookies

This website sets no cookies of its own. We use no analytics, no advertising networks, and no visitor tracking. Nothing is stored in your browser to identify you or follow you between visits.

One page can load content from another company, and that company may set its own cookies. We do not let that happen automatically:

  • Google Calendar embed on our tournaments page. This is not loaded when the page opens. It stays blocked behind a button until you choose to load it. If you click that button, Google receives your IP address and browser information and may set cookies, under Google's privacy policy. If you never click it, no request is ever made to Google. You can also view the same schedule as plain text on that page, or subscribe to the calendar feed directly.

Everything else this site needs, including our fonts, images, and stylesheets, is served from our own domain. Simply opening a page on this website contacts no one but us.

What we collect

βœ‰οΈ Contact form

When you use the form on our contact page, you send us your name, email address, subject, and message. The form is delivered to our club email by Formspree, a form-handling service that processes the submission on our behalf.

We use this only to reply to you. We do not add you to any list from a contact form alone.

πŸ“¬ Email list

If you ask to join our email list, we keep your email address so we can send club announcements, roughly once or twice a month. We keep it until you ask us to remove it.

To be removed, reply to any club email or write to WestportChessClub@gmail.com. We will remove you and confirm.

πŸ–₯️ Server logs

Like nearly all websites, our web host records standard access logs when a page is requested. These may include your IP address, the page requested, the time, and your browser type. They are used to keep the site running and secure, and they are not combined with anything else or used to build a profile of you.

πŸ“· Photos at club events

We sometimes take photos at club meetings and tournaments and post them to our website or social media. If you appear in a photo and would prefer it removed, email us and we will take it down.

What we do not do

  • We do not sell your personal information, and we never have.
  • We do not share your personal information with third parties for advertising or for their own marketing purposes.
  • We do not run analytics, advertising pixels, session recording, or cross-site tracking.
  • We do not use your information to make automated decisions about you.

Your rights

πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί If you are in the EU, EEA, or UK

Under the GDPR and UK GDPR you have the right to ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to receive it in a portable form.

Where we rely on your consent, such as for the email list, you can withdraw that consent at any time. Doing so does not affect anything we did before you withdrew it.

Our lawful bases are simple: consent for the email list, and legitimate interest for replying to a message you sent us and for keeping the site secure.

You also have the right to complain to your national data protection authority.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ If you are in California

Under the CCPA and CPRA you have the right to know what personal information we have collected, to request its deletion, to request correction, and not to be discriminated against for exercising those rights.

We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined by California law, so there is no opt-out to offer. We also do not use sensitive personal information for any purpose that would require an opt-out.

As a small volunteer club, we are almost certainly below the thresholds that make the CCPA apply to a business. We follow it anyway, because it is a reasonable way to treat people.

To exercise any right listed above, email WestportChessClub@gmail.com. We will respond within 30 days. There is no charge. We may ask you to confirm the email address in question so that we do not hand someone else's information to the wrong person.

Children

Chess is for everyone, and young players are very welcome at the club. This website is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information online from anyone under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has sent us personal information, email us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

If we change how we handle information, we will update this page and change the date at the top. If a change is significant, we will say so in a club announcement.
