Common Questions
Who are you?
We're the Westport Chess Club of Kansas City, Missouri. We've been going strong since 1986. We get together once a week to play chess, either casually or in tournaments. We're mostly over age 21, but students of all ages are welcome.
What if I'm not very good at chess?
Most people aren't great at chess—and that includes many of us! Playing with stronger players is one of the best ways to learn and improve. We have members of all skill levels who are happy to play with you, answer questions, and help you get better.
Can I bring my child?
Of course! Kids ages 6 and up are welcome. We do want you to know that we meet in a bar & grill that serves alcohol. Most of our members are over 21, and while most don't drink during club nights, some may have a beer. We've never had any issues, but we want to be transparent about the environment since it's your child.
Do I have to bring anything?
Nope! We provide weighted plastic chess pieces and roll-up vinyl chess mats (the classic club-style green ones). We also have analog chess clocks available if you want to use one. If you're playing in a rated tournament, please know your USCF ID.
Do I have to play in tournaments?
Not at all! There are always people ready to play casual, non-tournament chess. Come hang out, make some moves, and enjoy the company. Tournaments are available if you want them, but they're totally optional.
How much does it cost?
Your first visit is completely free. After that, it's $1 per visit for kids and students, and $2 per visit for everyone else. There is no membership fee to join our club.
