Common questions
Who are you?
We're the Westport Chess Club of Kansas City, Missouri. We've been going strong since 1986. We meet weekly for casual play and tournaments. While most members are adults (21+), students are always welcome.
How much does it cost?
There is no membership fee to join our club. Your first visit is free. After that, it's $1 per visit for kids and students, and $2 per visit for everyone else.
Do I have to bring anything?
Nope! We provide weighted plastic chess pieces and roll-up vinyl chess mats (the classic club-style forest green and white ones). We also have analog chess clocks available if you want to use one. If you're playing in a rated tournament, please bring your USCF ID.
What if I'm not very good at chess?
You might feel nervous about your skill level, but here's the thing: most people aren't great at chess, including many of us. Chess is complex! So cut yourself some slack. Besides, playing with stronger players is one of the best ways to learn and improve. We have members of all skill levels who are happy to play with you and answer questions. Want to get better? We can help with that too.
Do I have to play in tournaments?
Not at all! There are always people ready to play casual, non-tournament chess. Come hang out, make some moves, and enjoy the company. Tournaments are available if you want them, but they're totally optional.
Can I bring my child?
Of course! Kids ages 6 and up are welcome. Keep in mind that we meet in a bar & grill that serves alcohol. Most members are over 21. Some may have a beer while playing, but it's not a drinking scene (it's not conducive to good chess!). We've never had any issues, but we want parents to know the environment beforehand.
